Thematically:

“Lose Yourself” by Eminem and “Dream On” by Aerosmith both have similar themes. In “Lose Yourself” Eminem raps “You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow This opportunity comes once in a lifetime” and is saying that you should strive for your goals and try and make them come true. In “Dream On” Steven Tyler sings “Dream until your dream come true” and these lyrics clearly demonstrate that the song is pushing you to go all out for your dreams.

Sonically:

“Till I Collapse” by Eminem and “Monsters” by Imagine Dragons are very similar sonically, when stripped down they both have a punchy bass line with loud snare accents and electric guitar lines that drive the beat forward.

Obscurely:

“La Bamba” by Richie Valens and “4 Hugs a Day” by Charlotte Diamond are two songs that have literally nothing in common. “La Bamba” is in fact in Spanish, where “4 Hugs a Day” is a children song. These songs were a huge part of my childhood which my dad putting on “La Bamba” and my mom putting on Charlotte Diamond. I still have very fond memories of dancing around the kitchen island and singing “La Bamba” as well as my mom coming up and hugging me 4 times while listening to “4 Hugs a Day.”

Historically:

“Billy Don’t be a Hero” by Paper Lace and “Goodnight Saigon” by Billy Joel are both songs about war. They both were about the Vietnam War with the former being about a girl who wants her betrothed to “Keep your head low” and to “Come back and make me you wife,” this is an antiwar song. Goodnight Saigon is a Billy Joel song and was a commentary on how the people we were fighting in Vietnam are just that, people, and what right did we have to take their land from them. Both of these songs were composed about the Vietnam War with Paper Lace releasing theirs in 1974 and Joel in 1982.

Topically:

“Till I Collapse” by Eminem and “Kings Never Die” also by Eminem both talk about not giving in and how you can be immortalized with your actions. In “Kings Never Die” Eminem raps “Tryna secure your legacy like Shakur and ensure nobody’s ever gonna be what you were” when your pushing yourself you want to try and set records become a “King” and you want to set that record so far above everyone else you’re not forgotten ever.  “‘Cause sometimes you just feel tired, feel weak and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up but you gotta search within you and gotta find that inner strength.” In “Till I Collapse” Eminem is rapping about pushing yourself to the limit so that you can show yourself and everyone around you that you have the guts to accomplish the goal.
